Lusaka — OPPOSITION UNIP has injected about K5 million on youth soccer promotion in Lusaka urban constituencies.
UNIP president Tilyenji Kaunda said youths needed to be properly looked after and to have healthy bodies since they were the future leaders.
Tilyenji was speaking in Chawama compound on Saturday when he officiated at the UNIP youth soccer tournament played at Chawama grounds and sponsored by his party.
"We want to encourage youths to have healthy minds, souls and bodies. We need to properly feed, educate and nurture the youths in the country and sport is one of those," Tilyenji said.
Tilyenji said it was through sports that the country could have a healthy nation.
Matero team won the tournament and walked away with K500, 000, a football, a set of jerseys and a trophy.
The second, third and fourth positions were scooped by Kabwata, Mandevu and Chawama teams who were presented with a set of jerseys, a football, a trophy each and K80, 000, K60, 000 and K40, 000 respectively.
There were eight teams that participated.
UNIP district chairman Reverend Alfred Banda said about K5 million had been spent on the tournament.
And UNIP national youth chairman Frank Musonda said the tournament would also act as a way of kicking AIDS out in communities.
