Kenya: Firms Should Support Soccer

editorial

Nairobi — The Tusker Cup tournament which ended on Saturday provided plenty of entertainment for football fans, especially at a time when the new football season is yet to start.

The tournament also showed how much a little money and television coverage can improve a game. All that is required is commitment.

Football needs support from the corporate sector. We keep hearing that hackneyed excuse from these corporate organisations about lack of organisation and transparency in the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) management, yet many of these firms have teams playing in the KFF leagues.

Kenya Breweries, the sponsors of the Tusker Cup, have shown that it is possible to put money in football and stage a decent tournament.

Things may not be at their best at KFF, but with a private company owned by the clubs managing the league, there are fewer chances of money being misappropriated. Corporate organisations can now support the league through this company.

Since television revenue is what drives football, it is time the media houses came together and put in a bid for live broadcast of league matches as a way of improving the standards of the game. This is what NTV did with the live broadcast of Saturday's final.

Everyone has to play his or her part in rebuilding our football. The fans will do their bit by attending matches.

There is plenty of money in the corporate social responsibility budgets of several companies which are doing a great job in helping to improve the lives of Kenyans.

Some of this money should be put into the local league because to do so will create employment and thus attract more customers for the companies involved.
