Nigeria: Inec Launches Election Stakeholders Forum

1 August 2005

Lagos — As part of its mobilisation strategies for 2007 elections, Inec has concluded plans to launch a Stakeholders Election Forum this Thursday.

Inec Director of Public Affairs, Mr Steve Osemeke told tour correspondent in Abuja yesterday that stakeholders had been invited.

Osemeke said the initiative was part of the Inec Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu's, plan to mobilise stakeholders for the forthcoming general elections.

He said after the launch in Abuja, similar fora would be established at state and local government levels.

Those invited to grace the launch included leaders of the 30 registered parties, Inec resident electoral commissioners, civil societies, the media among others.

Iwu had told political leaders at a parley on July 12, that the commission would establish a Directorate of Political Parties Liaison and Monitoring to enhance further interaction be tween it and the political parties.

"I will therefore appeal to the political parties to support this initiative as it will further guarantee the maintenance of a level playing ground for all," he said.
