Nigeria: Federal Polytechnics, Colleges of Education Get Councils

Abuja — The Federal Government on 1 August inaugurated the governing councils of 17 federal polytechnics and 20 federal colleges of education and charged the members to implement a nine-point agenda designed to enhance the quality of tertiary education in their charge.

Education minister, Mrs. Chinwe Obaji at the inauguration urged the members to provide imaginative and responsible leadership that will assist government salvage the nation's tertiary education sector, re-establish and sustain quality as well as return education in Nigeria to its past glory.

She listed academic excellence, innovativeness, transparency, morale rectitude and the genuine pursuit and search for knowledge to better humanity, as values to be enthroned in the country's educational institutions at all levels.

The minister also issued directives to the governing council members, which include ensuring that their schools establish a dress code for students, thorough screening of all prospective candidates and the commencement of in-house training.

Others are the use of information and communication technology in every activity of the institution, a December 2005 deadline for all schools to begin the active operation of their website, adherence to carrying capacity in the admission of new students and ensuring the enforcement of the September\ October -May\June academic calendar.
