Zimbabwe: Youths to Tour War Camps

5 August 2005

Harare — The Ministry of Youth Development and Employment Creation is organising trips to various former liberation war camps in neighbouring countries that were used by freedom fighters as a way of conscientising the youths on the history of the country.

Youth Development and Employment Creation deputy minister, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere, who was recently in Mozambique with youths drawn from all the provinces, said the ministry was working on a sustained programme that would see a number of youths visiting historical shrines outside the country.

"Our next stop should be Freedom Camp in Zambia but we are still working on the modalities.

"The visits are meant to conscientise the youths about the history of our struggle and the trips are there to make them see and appreciate what happened outside the country.

"Some of the youths that went to Mozambique admitted that the trip had given them an appreciation and an insight into the history of the country's liberation struggle," he said.

The recent trip to Mozambique, which was undertaken at the end of last month, saw 120 youths drawn from technical colleges and universities travelling to Chimoio Camp, which was used by Zanla combatants during the liberation struggle.

A number of freedom fighters and refugees lost their lives when Rhodesian forces attacked the camp in 1977.

Cde Kasukuwere told the youths that the trip should serve as a reminder to them to work for the country's prosperity and development in honour of the country's gallant sons and daughters who lost their lives while liberating the country.

He also challenged the youths to defend the country's sovereignty as well as continue to pay homage to the country's fallen heroes.
