Zambia: Society Rakes in K1.9 Billion

9 August 2005

THE Agricultural and Commercial Show Society of Zambia (ACSZ) said it has recorded a turnover of K1.9 billion from the just-ended show held from 28th July to 1st August in Lusaka.

Society president Kenneth Chibesakunda said at a Press briefing in Lusaka yesterday that 130,000 people passed through the gates.

He said the figure was slightly higher than that of the number of people who attended the show last year.

Mr Chibesakunda said the show was a resounding success both in the number of attendance and exhibits.

He said last year the Society had invested K1 billion and raked in K1.8 billion and this year the Society had spend K1.5 billion and had made a turnover of K1.9 billion.

Mr Chibesakunda said the Society had initially estimated to make a turnover of K2.8 billion.

He noted that the Society was unable to meet the target due to the shortage of diesel in the country during the show period.

Mr Chibesakunda said the shortage of diesel in the country had an adverse effect on the show goers, as many people were unable to take their families to the show due to shortage of the commodity in the country.

He noted that despite the fuel problems, the Society had recorded a number of successes, as there were no serious incidents such as motor vehicle thefts.

Mr Chibesakunda said the Society was still reviewing what went wrong during the Show with the aim of finding a lasting solution to some of the perennial problems that had been facing the society in the past years.

He said the Society was committed to making the show grounds the best in the region with modern facilities.

"Obviously Show goers deserve better facilities when they come to the show; they need to enter and leave the Show grounds without any hustle," Mr Chibesakunda said.

He said the Society was examining the possibilities of erecting new exhibitions halls with modern facilities so that even during off-show times, the infrastructure could be used for meetings, seminars and conferences.

Mr Chibesakunda said the Society had engaged the Zambia National Service (ZNS) to construct new roads in the new areas of the show grounds.

He said ZNS would soon move in to start constructing and resurfacing the roads within the Show grounds.
