Rwanda: Minister Warns On Environment

Kigali — In a bid to reduce environmental degradation and its impact on power supply, the State Minister in charge of Energy and Communication in the ministry of Infrastructure, Eng. Albert Butare, has called upon Rwandans to embark on using modern stoves and reduce dependency on wood.

During a recent meeting with all mayors, the minister said, "At least every family should be using a modern stove in order to protect the environment and reduce the power problem in the country." The meeting was aimed at responding to problems concerning deforestation and its impact on the environment and power supply.

The use of modern stoves was emphasised following a study done by the Kigali Institute of Science, Research and Technology (KIST) on alternative source of energy in order to reduce dependency on wood.

"We have to check out early. If we continue cutting trees at this rate, the side effects will be very dangerous," the minister noted, and warned local leaders to sensitise residents on the need to conserve the environment through better farming and social practices.

He said the government is planning to utilise the lakes and rivers available to produce more hydro electric power. About 90 per cent of Rwandans depend on wood for cooking.
