Lusaka — ZESCO has connected Nyimba to the national electricity grid at a cost of K10 billion.

Zesco senior manager for marketing and public relations Monica Chisela said the project, which commenced in 2001 involved the construction of a 76-kilometre line of 33 kilovolts from Petauke to Nyimba.

Chisela said the next phase would be to commission the supply to the consumers, which would involve setting up internal wiring for the boma, hospitals, schools and residential areas which would be done within the next two weeks.

" It is worth noting that Nyimba district has hospitals, a high school and at least fifteen primary schools, she said.

Chisela said up to 10,000 people would benefit from the project.

"The total population of Nyimba, the boma itself is about 10,000 people and 200 families will immediately benefit from the electrification," she said.

Chisela observed that the major economic activity in Nyimba apart from small-scale farming is mill grinding.

"Mill grinders are currently using diesel to power the grinding mills. The coming on of electricity will make this business cost effective, cleaner and convenient," she said.

The electrification of Nyimba was a government initiative under rural electrification authority and Zesco Limited was contracted to carryout the project.

The line was energised on the September 1, 2005.
