Nigeria:Akwa Ibom to Set Up Power Supply

Lagos — In its bid to generate about 685 megawatts of electricity to the national grid and provide uninterrupted power supply to the State signed a contract with the Group Five Construction and General Electric Company.

The contract signing ceremony took place recently at the Government House Uyo.

Speaking at the ceremony the State Governor, Arc Obong Victor Attah said to provide adequate power for the country, Nigeria needs to invest billions of dollars in the power sector, "the cost of the project is about USD150million which is prudent and necessary. I commend the President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the Federal Government for recognising the need to invest in the power sector and for proposing to invest some of the exces crude oil funds in new power generation and and transmitting facilities," the process that has produced Group Five and General Electric as contractors for this project is a set standard with meticulous attention to quality" Attah added.

The Chairman, Ibom Power Company, Dr. Okon Ansa who signed on behalf of the State Government, said "the Ibom Power Company is developing the first truly independent power plant that will revolutonalise the Power sector in Nigeria," I commend the State Governor Obong Attah," Ansa continued whose vision has led to the financing of this project that would help salvage the problem of inadequate Power supply in the State.

Also speaking at the event managing Director of group 5 Construction Company Mr. Mike Upton described his company as an Active African Contractor and one of the largest in the African Sub region with focus on oil and gas will hopefully make a long term contribution towards power generation in Nigeria generally and pledged good partnership with the General Electric Company to ensure the successful execution of the project.
