Mensiegar Karnga, Jr.

5 October 2005

Women from the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) member states residing in Liberia acting under the "ECOWAS Women in Liberia (EWIL) have ended a 3 days fast, prayer and intercessory services for the future of Liberia. The women sought God's direction and guidance for the holding of free and fair elections.

In their intercession, the ECOWAS women beseeched God to give Liberian voters a true sense of direction to select the best leaders that would lead the nation and its people to glory after 14 years of brutal civil conflict.

Madam Evelyn Fairley , EWIL Chairman for Social Welfare Center for Women Empowerment said and one of the organizers of the program participants were drawn from both the Christian and Muslim communities.

For her part, the Chairlady of EWIL, Chinyere N.

Nwabudike, a Nigerian national said they took the initiative so that God can use the voters to choose the kind of leadership that will work for peace and democracy so as to end the country's seething political crisis.

The EWIL Chairlady indicated that the restoration of Liberia to nobler heights depends on the guidance of God and not the Liberians. She noted that it was only prayers that can change the situation in the country.

"We are eager to see Liberia returns the comity of nation," Madam Nwabudike stressed. "If peace is to once again ring in the ears of the Liberian people, God must take control of their decision and bring forward a God-fearing leader who will prioritize reconciliation and forgiveness." The ECOWAS Women chairlady further added that although they were seeking God divine intervention for the entire country, the fast and intercessory prayers were targeted at female presidential and legislative candidates contesting the 2005 elections.

According to her, they have endorsed the candidacy of women in the race because "women in government would mean well for the country".

She intimated, "it is time that Liberian forget the bitter past, and use this elections as melting point.

"Learn to denounce the concept of war, hatred, greed for power and corruption in the new Liberia so envisaged.
