The British High Commission recently donated equipment to the Media House in Yaounde.

The British High Commission in Cameroon on November 2 in Yaounde formally presented equipment and books worth CFA 10 million to the Media House in Yaounde. The ceremony which was co-presided at by the British High Commissioner in Cameroon Richard Wildash and the Minister of Communication, Prof. Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo marked the end of a 10-day training course on good governance, democracy and the ethics of journalism organised at the Media House by the British High Commission in Yaounde.

Material provided by the British High Commission included computers, a printer, a projector, a television set, a DVD player and a stock of books on topics such as media techniques, media ethics, politics and sport.

At the ceremony, Richard Wildash noted that the British High Commission's support to the Media House is intended to promote access to information and freedom of expression, which are key elements in strengthening Cameroon's democracy and promoting good governance. He said that the donations are concrete and physical contributions to the media landscape in Cameroon and hoped that the equipment will not only be useful to the Media House but will also help journalists from both the public and private sectors in their daily work.

On his part, Minister Pierre Moukoko Mbonjo expressed his heartfelt thanks to the British High Commission for their action to promote democracy and freedom of press in the country. "Actions speaks louder than words", the Minister said. While noting that the gifts and the seminar on good governance are signs of the United Kingdom's effort to promote an active press in Cameroon, the Minister of Communication said that the seminar highlighted the existence of the Media House which journalists should take advantage of in making the best out of their profession.

The Minister hoped that what participants learned from the seminar will not only go a long way to improve their skills but will spread the good news to others who were not at the seminar.
