Johannesburg — A VIRULENT strain of influenza swept through SA in 1918, leaving more
than 300000 corpses in its wake. Health facilities were paralysed by the
flood of sick patients, and authorities could not bury the dead fast
enough.
The outbreak of a deadly strain of bird flu in Asia and eastern Europe
has raised the frightening spectre of a repeat scenario should the virus
evolve into an equally lethal form easily transmitted between humans.
