State House — President Yoweri Museveni has said Forum for Democratic Change and its leader Dr Kizza Besigye cannot win the forth-coming Presidential election.
Addressing a press conference at State House Nakasero, thursday night Museveni said the FDC did not enjoy enough support countrywide to win the next election.
"The other day you saw them trying to bring back looting," the president charged and accused FDC of trying to create unrest. "FDC must explain why they encouraged looting and if they didn't, why then didn't they condemn it? Because it was being done in their name," a visibly tired Museveni said.
"I was surprised when people said Besigye should not be tried because he is a politician; a mere presidential candidate?" Museveni mused. "Even a sitting president can be impeached. We cannot allow anyone to be above the law."
Museveni also sounded a strong warning to all those opposition members bent on intimidating people during the forthcoming campaigns issuing threats of any kind.
"That must stop. Any form of threats should not be tolerated," he charged in a mixture of Luganda and English, "I am personally dying to land my hands on anyone out there threatening people."
He called on anyone who is threatened to make a statement at the nearest police station and report the same to their local leaders so that it can be brought to the attention of Movement officials at the headquarters.
Referring to a 27-page summary of the NRM manifesto, Museveni highlighted several achievements made by the movement government in the last 20 years. These included what he termed as ending the reign of terror, professionalising the army, establishment of the rule of law and improvement in the housing sector.
