Uganda: 2006 Poll Date Set

Kampala — PRESIDENTIAL elections will be held on February 23, 2006, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced yesterday.

The elections will start at 7:00am and end at 5:00pm at all polling stations in the country, the EC chairperson, Eng. Dr. Badru Kiggundu, said in a statement issued last evening.

Six candidates are to contest in the presidential elections. They are President Yoweri Museveni of the NRM, Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye of the FDC, John Ssebaana Kizito of DP, Miria Kalule Obote of UPC and two independent candidates, Hajji Nasser Ntege Sebaggala and Dr. Abed Bwanika.

Kiggundu said the commission had set December 16, 2005 to February 21, 2006 as the campaign period.

The commission will meet the candidates on Monday for a briefing.

Presidential, parliament and district chairperson elections will be held on the same day.
