Uganda: Did FDC Play Tricks On NRM?

Kampala — A rumour doing the rounds has it that the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) managed to infiltrate the National Resistance Movement (NRM) grassroots structures and influenced the results of NRM's primaries.

It is said that when NRM held its grassroots elections in September and October, several FDC members contested and won. This gave them positions on the electoral colleges that elected NRM candidates for the 2006 national elections.

According to the grapevine, the FDC elements in the colleges colluded to undermine strong NRM candidates and back people who, come the elections, can be easily beaten by FDC.

Key NRM contestants who lost the party polls include Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, Dr. Kezimbira Miyingo, Prof. Semakula Kiwanuka, Baguma Isoke, Philip Byaruhanga and Simon Mayende.

Within the NRM, it is said that the losers are merely using the allegations of FDC infiltration to cause a re-election. However, those members whose roots are in the guerilla movement are not waiting to be ambushed, and have set up a committee to investigate the matter.
