Namibia: Kalahari Sands Embraces Bee And Redesigns the Casino

Windhoek — The Kalahari Sands Hotel has announced the transfer of 7% of the shares of Sun International holdings to previously disadvantaged people in a deal that now allows the employees of the hotel and casino to participate in the scheme (started in December 2005). The Sands is part of the Sun International group.

In a statement from Sun International, the company says Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) "will be a key driver of sustainable economic growth and transformation in South Africa". The BEE parties holding the 7% share of Sun International will be represented by Dinokana Investments (PTY) Ltd. This was announced at the official opening of the Kalahari Sands' N$13,5 million refurbishment that includes the Group Welcome Lounge, casino extension (inclusive of a smoking and non-smoking area), the Salon Privé and a Wellness Centre on Thursday, 12 January.

According to marketing manager Tania Reid, the refurbishment aims to offer guests the ultimate hospitality experience that Sun International is renowned for. Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism Leon Jooste, the guest of honour for the evening, urged the management team of the Kalahari Sands to explore all opportunities to make the tourism sector and its economic potential accessible to all Namibians, and, especially to its employees.

Jooste said " â-oe your employees must not only remain as workers for the rest of their lives but must be offered an opportunity to become partners and shareholders and to grow with this industry". "Once again, the Kalahari Sands Hotel and Casino paves the way in the hospitality industry in Namibia by empowering its employees who will now enjoy a bi-annual dividend through this share scheme. It is a wonderful and exciting time for all our employees in Namibia and we welcome them as our partners and look forward to taking the business forward together", said John Airey, the Kalahari Sands' general manager. According to Airey, "the existing Sun International Employee Share Trust will have a 43% share in Dinokana Investments as well as keeping their share in Sun International Ltd".

Airey said that there were still more improvements planned like the refurbishment of all hotel rooms and suites, the lobby and the Oasis bar as well as the Dunes Restaurant.

"The Kalahari Sands is now in a position to be one of the leading modern accommodation establishments in Namibia and can now compete at regional and international level with other hotels. I encourage you to be an efficient ad quality service provider to both our own people and visitors".
