Kenya: Omwanza to Tackle East African Race

Nairobi — Turin Marathon champion, Beatrice Omwanza, will lead a strong Kenyan team to the inaugural Eastern African regional half-marathon on Saturday in Nairobi.

The event will revolve around the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and has attracted five nations. These are Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan and Somalia.

Omwanza will team up with last year's Brussels Marathon champion, Rose Nyangacha, last week's Armed Forces 30km winner, Chematia Chemaringo and Cecilia Wangare, who was second and Singapore Marathon runner-up Hellen Cherono of Kiptenden Athletics Club.

Fred Mogaka, who won the Armed Forces' road race in Thika, leads the men's team. Others are Stephen Ndung'u, John Birgen, Dominic Ruto and Julius Kimtai.

Adanech Zekiros and Teigist Abedi (women) and Gudisha Shentema and Tesfaye Dirba (men) will fly Ethiopia's flag in the event.

Daniel Andrew, Dickson Marwa, Mohammed Msenduki and Peter Bura will represent Tanzania while Uganda will have Chares Mukasa, ObadiahNkabi, Samuel Lutabi, Siraj Kiptanui and Sirino Ebong.

Only one runner , Abdi Nassir Said Ibrahim, will be representing Somalia.
