17 February 2006

Kigali — The National Police intend to shut down all churches and mosques that make noise and disrupt public harmony.

The police will confiscate equipment used to make noise, according to the Police spokesman Theos Badege, who said the new directive is in line new laws on noise pollution.

Churches and Mosques officials have been told to lower voices and the volume of loud speakers when calling for prayer, or face a fine that ranges between Frw 10,000 and Frw 100,000.

Nightclubs without soundproof were forced to stop operating last year.
