Zayed International for the Environment in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), has given a plaque to President Yahya Jammeh in recognition of his prodigious contributions to the environment.
The presentation was made in Dubai by the chairman of Zayed International, Dr Bin Fahad, following President Jammeh's address and participation in the ninth Special Session of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council Forum, hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates.
It could be recalled that during the Assembly of the African Union (AU), held in Sudan in January, President Jammeh held consultations with the leaders of six countries - Mr Blaise Compaoré, President of Burkina Faso; Mr Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya; Mr Bothuel Pakalitha Mosisili, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho; Mr Bernard Makuza, Prime Minister, representing President Paul Kagame of the Republic of Rwanda; and Mr Mohamed Ghannouchi, Prime Minister, representing His Excellency President Zine Elabidine Ben Ali of the Republic of Tunisia, to adopt the declaration on the implementation in Africa of the Bali Strategic Plan for technology support and capacity building in the field of the Environment.
President Jammeh was subsequently invited by the Executive Director of UNEP to address the ninth Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum held in Dubai this month. This gathering saw the participation of the ministers in charge of the Environment of all countries of the world as well as other international organisations.
The six countries President Jammeh held consultations with last month in Sudan are piloting the implementation of the Bali Strategic Plan which was adopted by the 23rd Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) of UNEP.
The plan has been prepared as a means of assisting developing countries and countries with economies in transition to address their capacity building and technology support needs in the field of the Environment. It is envisaged that the plan will provide specific answers to the necessity for a holistic approach to technology support and capacity development in African countries and the regions of the world.
President Jammeh's leadership for this process commenced in 2004 when he agreed to foster international cooperation in the field of the Environment. Subsequently, the Gambian leader launched the Bali pilot process in the margins of the 2005 World Summit held in September in New York.V
