Kampala — A GOVERNMENT forest reserve, Kyewaga, sheltering Lake Victoria near Entebbe, faces destruction after a private firm, Seven Kings, which intends to establish a housing estate, encroached on it.
The reserve is at the centre of controversy between the National Forest authority (NFA) and Seven Kings.
NFA is mandated by law to oversee protected forests.
NFA's Georgina Kugonza Musisi on Wednesday said the company felled trees covering 13.6 hectares and burnt vegetation comprising palm trees, with the intention to sell plots on the reserve.
"It has come to the attention of NFA that Seven Kings Limited has established an estate office adjacent to the reserve, apportioned the land into plots, which they are allegedly offering for sale to unsuspecting members of the public," said a statement issued by the NFA.
