Kenya: Water Shortage Eats Into Family Budgets

Nairobi — Francis Mutua Mutuku wakes up at 5 a.m. six days a week to trek to Industrial Area in search of menial jobs to sustain his family of five.

On a lucky day Mr Mutuku, a resident of Soweto slums in Kayole, 10km east of Nairobi, lands a job that pays him Sh100 for eight hours. This meets his basic needs, such as food, education and rent. His wife is left home to take care of the domestic chores, but this may have to change now that Sh100 can no longer "maintain" his family.
