Gambia: Herbalists Form National Association

Leaders of the varoius herbal associations in the seven administrative divisions of the country, on 6th February converged at the Berending Herbal Center to form a national body called the Gambia Herbal Organisation (GHO).

According to Alhaji Amadou Njie, one of the founders, executive members of this new organisation will soon commence on a nationwide tour of herbal centers in the country, to create awareness on the planned project of activities and principles of the organisation. He stated among other things that the GHO will seek to devise ways of combating certain prevalent diseases and ailments in the country, as well as foster a cordial relationship between traditional healers and the department of state for health.

Sarjo Sandeng, vice president of Bakau Herbal Organisation, said that the organisation will hold a three-day general meeting, to discuss it's strategic and future plans.

Advising his colleagues, Baba Leigh, a member of Commonwealth Science Council cautioned herbalists to desist from making unfounded claims of having a cure for AIDS. "Please try to conform with government health principles, for example if a pregnant woman reports to your clinic, insist on her declaring a valid hospital card and the other requirements," he encouraged.
