Uganda: Election Update: Museveni Takes Nyabushozi

With the first batch of results coming in, reports indicate President Museveni was a comfortable winner at his Rusheere polling station in Nyabushozi. The incumbent amassed 478 votes, with all the other candidates getting none.

Besigye leads Mbale

With preliminary resiults from Mbale Municipality coming in however, Besigye was in the lead in Mbale Central (A), garnerig 214 votes. Museveni came second with 130 votes, Miria managed 3, while Sebaana and Bwanika managed 2 apiece.

Vote counting is now taking place at polling stations in most parts the country. Early results are expected within the next one hour.

One of Kampala city's mayoral candidates Al Haji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala has been apprehended and interrogated at Kiira Road Police in Kampala. Ssebagala was reportedly campaigning in his home area of Kisasi, Kampala. Uganda's electoral laws prohibit campaigning on Election Day.

Arrested in connection with rigging

Four people have been arrested in Kisasi, a suburb of Kampala district in connection with vote rigging. They are alleged to have been conniving to cast more than one ballot in the ballot boxes. They were however quickly apprehended and taken to Kisasi Police Post.

Smooth kick off, huge turn out

Elections kick off smoothly in most parts of the country, with early indications of a huge voter turn out. Polling stations are reportedly characterised by long queues.

Kampala calm

The capital city, Kampala, is calm, with very litle human activity in the usually busy city center. Only a handful of vehicles were noticeable in the Old Taxi Park, which is usually a hive of activity.

Shops closed

Most shops remain closed, and policemen on patrol are a fairly common sight. There are deployments of between three and eight officers at petrol stations and banks.
