Gambia: Table Tennis Ranking Tourney Starts

A press release from the Gambia tabl;e Tennis Association (GTTA) has stated that the 3rd quarterly ranking tournament of Table Tennis will take place this today at 4pm at the table tennis hall, house in the Independence Stadium, Bakau. The ranking tournamnet will be played in a period of three days.

The Day One agendas will feuature the review of the previous minutes, election of Vice Secretary who resigned, and chairperson of umpires & Referees Committee who traveled.The forthcoimng ITTF course which is due in May 2006, will be also discussed.

According to the relesase, the exciting but tough event will draw together people from all aspects and ages of the community and the categories played will be the Gambian Men's Open, Non-Gambian Men's Open, Women's Open, Juniors category (under 18 years), Cadets category (under 15 years), Men's Open (all nationalities) and the Veterans category. The release added: "The respective defending champions for these various categories are: Fabakary Cham (810 points), Adebayo G. Surakatu (600 points), Lilian Owens (847 points), Yankuba Drammeh (460 points), Abdul Hydara (600 points), Adebayo G. Surakatu (600 points) and Daniel Able-Thomas (600 points) respectively. The atmosphere will be greatly improved as the defending champions will be expected to defend their ranking positions on new modern International Table Tennis Tables received recently from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Members of the public wishing to participate in any of the above-mentioned categori es of the ranking tournament are welcomed to do so with the association as soon as possible."

The release said that schools and communities are been invited to apply for the old Table Tennis tables. "Applicants must demonstrate that they are able and willing to promote and develop the game of Table Tennis in their schools and/or communities, Attend courses organised by the GTTA, participate in tournaments organised by GTTA and organise their own, be able to buy balls and bats either from their own budget and /or from fundraising and or better still sponsorship, have a secured hall / room etc where the tables can be secured and managed by a responsible focal point. The applicants can address all applications to the secretary-general of the Gambia table Tennis Association (GTTA) care of GNOC, Independence Stadium. To reach us not later than Friday 17th of March, 2006. We reserve the right to not allocate any of the tables to anyone, and to maintain them or dispose of them, as we feel best," the release stated.
