Maputo — Chinese President Hu Jintao expressed on Saturday his solidarity with the victims of the earthquake that hit the central and southern regions of Mozambique in the early hours of Thursday, that killed at least five people and left another 40 injured, and destroyed 400 houses, according to a preliminary report. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated at 7.5 by the Richter scale, and had its epicenter in the locality of Chiurairue, in the district of Espungabera, in the central Manica province.
The general director of the Mozambican Disasters Management National Institute (INGC), Paulo Zucula, is cited in Saturday's issue of the daily paper "Noticias" as saying that the data on the victims are not yet definitive, because the assessment teams are still in the field in the different areas that suffered the earthquake.
"I was deeply moved when I learnt of the earthquake that occurred in Mozambique, and that caused deaths and left many people injured and caused many material damages", reads the Hu Jintao message, that was received by AIM on Saturday.
The document, that was adressed to Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, reiterates that "in the name of the people and the government of China, I am adressing our deeply felt condolences".
The earthquake affected the central Tete, and Sofala, and the southern Inhambane, Gaza, and Maputo provinces, and was also felt in the neighbouring Zimbabwe and South Africa.
