Gambia: NCAC Receives First U.S. Black Army Major Photo

Mr Wayne Young, the publisher, Port of Harlem journal in the USA, last week donated to the National Museum a stencil sketch of Major Martin R Delaney (1812-1885), a Gambian Mandinka of slave origin and first black to reach the rank of major in the US army in the mid 19th century.

The photo, which was received on behalf of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) by its executive director, Mr Momodou Joof, will be mounted at the Juffereh Museum.
