Nigeria: 'Education, Panacea to Devt'

Lagos — Chairman, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Chief Ralph Alabi, has called for sufficient funding for the education sector, describing it as the only panacea to the nation's development.

Alabi gave the advice while addressing newsmen in Akure, Ondo State yesterday, on activities lined up for the Golden Jubilee celebration of St Joseph's College, Ondo.

He lamented inadequate funding of education in the country, describing it as a serious issue which should be addressed without further delay, saying once there was adequate funding, all the dilapidated structures would be improved upon.

According to him, there is nothing that could be compared to education, as it is the veritable permanent legacy for generations.

"Today, funding of schools should not be left for the government alone, as it is very important, because it brings sound education, which is instrumental to the nation's development," he said.

Alabi, who is also Chairman, Planning Committee for the Golden Jubilee, said he was disturbed by the dilapidated buildings and infrastructure at the College, saying the Old boys Association of the College has decided to launch a N100million endowment fund to sustain the school in its upper segment of the education sector of the Nigerian economy.

His words: "Perhaps, what gives away the age from usage is its infrastructure which has to bow to the knock-about of ages past. Even so most of the original structures as depicted by the building still bear the exact geometry of old.

"We appeal to the government and well-meaning Nigerians to lend support as education is the veritable permanent legacy generationas exemplified by the college", he added.
