Eritrea: Soil And Water Conservation Activities in Areza Sub-Zone

Areza — The inhabitants of Areza, Adibein and Adi-N'amn in the Southern region carried out popular campaign focusing on soil and water conservation.

Accordingly, over 1 km embankments and 1.5 km-long terracing have been put in place so as to protect a nearby dam that is a source of drinking water for 8,000 people from excessive flooding. Furthermore, the inhabitants of the sub-zone are carrying out similar undertakings and contributing money, as well as labor.

In a related report, the inhabitants of Koatit, Mai-Mine sub-zone, are carrying out similar development activities. So far, 5 km-long road has been renovated, in addition to 3 km terracing and 400 cubic meters embankments through popular campaign. Efforts are also underway to promote underground water resources in the locality, according Mr. Melake Tesfamichael, Administrator of Koatit.
