Liberia: Ellen Caught In Whirlwind - Opts For Development Efforts, Not Taylor; Gets Security Council's Empathy

The Sirleaf Administration, caught in the whirlwind of international power-play, is praying that the plight of 3 million Liberians will supersede the obsession to eradicate impunity by prosecuting Charles Taylor in Sierra Leone.

"Mr. Taylor [was not] indicted in a Liberian court, and so that is not an issue for us at this point. The Liberian people will feel that justice is done when attention of world media move from Mr. Taylor to being able to examine the support for their return to normalcy, to peace, to development. That's where the Liberian emphasis rests today. I hope the world media will make the shift from one individual to three million people's quest for a new life," President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf told a press conference held shortly after her UN speech that was dominated by Taylor-related issues.
