Makalle — President Girma Wolde-Giorgis said that the execution of the Tekeze Hydroelectric Power Project would have a significant contribution to prevent desertification.
The President told ENA following a visit to the project Monday that the project would enable to expand electric power service to the rural parts of the country and also sell electricity to neighbouring countries.
Girma said the expansion of desertification due to deforestation and erosion is a threat to the development of the country.
The President called on the public to conserve soil and water and also engage in forest development to prevent desertification.
The President has also visited the then TPLF/EPRDF's operation department in the outskirts of Makalle.
