Namibia: Oil And Electricity Posed As Major Challenges for Namibia

Windhoek — The rising oil prices and the increasing electricity demand in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region are the two challenges that Namibia will face in the near future, Minister of Finance Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said last week as she presented the 2006/7 budget.

"We have to be prepared to manage the risks. The recent power supply interruptions in South Africa will necessitate Namibia to increase its own power generation capacity," the finance minister said. As a short term solution, she called for responsible energy consumption. Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said, as a long term solution, the country needed to ensure that energy requirements were met through stable and reliable supplies.
