Kigali — Rwandans continue to be embarrassed whenever they go abroad to attend international functions.
The recent embarrassment was in Italy when the Rwanda cultural troupe emerged the winner of the international folklore competition in Sicily, Italy. When it was time to sing Rwanda's national hymn in recognition of the country's triumph, the old flag that has red and an 'R' in the middle was raised.
What was initially happiness for the Rwandans turned into embarrassment and discontent. The triumphant Rwandans had to think fast and provide their own flag, through their guide, to replace the one raised -- in spite of the fact that this one was not meant for hoisting because it lacked the slot for the rope. The flag was hoisted alright, but the damage had already been done.
BTH further established that the discarded national anthem, too, is usually sung at major international functions.
Some homework for our ambassadors.
