Liberia: FLAWUL Troubled!

The Forestry, Logging and Allied Workers' Union of Liberia (FLAWUL) has expressed its deep distaste with members of the National Transitional Legislative Assembly (NTLA) over what they called "a mortgaging of the future of the country." FLAWUL, in a release issued recently said "The NTLA's passage of the bill of a Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) between the Liberian government and Mittal Steel was intended to benefit few officials at the detriment of the Liberian people." The union's concern arises from the mounting evidence of irregularities, corruption, including influence peddling and outright bribery that characterized the NTLA in the award process of former LAMCO concession to Mittal Steel.

FLAWUL has therefore submitted documentary evidence to the House committees on Concessions and Investment, Forestry and Agriculture, Lands, Mines and Energy; and Judiciary to form a cogent part of an on going hearing in a complaint against the Mittal Steel agreement by the Union at the Capitol Building.
