8 April 2006

Nairobi — Senior police officers were yesterday reshuffled in changes that saw the appointment of the first ever woman provincial boss.

The transfers - announced by police chief Hussein Ali - came just a month after the police raid on the Standard Group that saw newspapers set ablaze and the Kenya Television Network switched off for a few hours.

Maj Gen Ali said the changes were routine and in line with his policy of ensuring that no officer serves in an area for more than three years.

Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Kaindi will head Nyanza Province as the police chief. She was in charge of the CID training school in Embakasi, Nairobi, and has previously served as Kenya's representative to Interpol.

Assistant police commissioner Mary Auma Kaol will be attached to Interpol in Lyon, moving from Vigilance House where she was in charge of the Criminal Registry.

Mr Scavier Mbogho is the new Nyanza CID boss, while Mr John Maritim will head North Eastern, replacing Mr Henry Ondieki whose fate was not immediately known.

Mr Isaiah Osugo, who has been investigating the Armenian mercenary claims, is the new Nairobi CID boss, replacing Mr Sammy Githui who has been transferred to Eastern province in the same capacity.

Mr Patrick Mugo will head investigations in Western province, while Mr Moses N. Ombati, who was the commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, will be in charge of the Anti Stock Theft Unit. His post at the airports has been taken by Ms Beatrice Nduta, who was his deputy.

Mr Francis Changwany is the new Railways police commandant, while Ms Christine J.Mutua will be in charge of the Gender and Children's desk at the commissioner's office.

The new police spokesman is Mr Gideon Kibunja who takes over from Mr Jasper Ombati, who has been redeployed to Kirinyaga as police division head. Mr Kibunja was until his new appointment the CID public relations officer.

Mr Gideon Amalla, the Embakasi head is now a staffing officer at the Nairobi Provincial Police headquarters, while Mr Elias Oduori is the new Tourist Police commandant.

The Flying Squad will be headed by Mr Reche Nyaga, formerly head of the Special Crime Prevention Unit, taking over from Mr Sebastian Ndaru.

Vigilance House did not give details on the fate of all the officers who have been replaced.

Maj-Gen Ali congratulated Ms Kaindi on her appointment, saying she was destined to excel with her "vast experience and impeccable service record."
