Uganda: Christians Celebrate Palm Sunday

Kampala — CHRISTIANS yesterday flocked churches to celebrate Palm Sunday, the day that marks the beginning of the holy week. It is a special week leading to Easter Sunday, the day Christians mark Jesus' resurrection.

At All Saints Cathedral Nakasero, hundreds of Christians turned up for the 10:00 o'clock service. Edward Gaamuwa delivered the day's sermon on the theme, 'The power of humility'.

"Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord," Gaamuwa said as the congregation, waving palm branches, replied, "Hosanna in the highest!"

The Rev. Michael Okwi Esakhan read out a message from the Archbishop, Henry Luke Orombi, regarding the Church's stand on the excommunicated pro-gay bishop, Dr. Christopher Ssenyonjo.

Orombi reiterated that Ssenyonjo could no longer use the title of bishop in the Church of Uganda and could no longer minister or participate in any function on behalf of the Church of Uganda.

Gaamuwa said a person who does not insist on his rights and merits fits the definition of humble. He said although Jesus was God, he humbled himself so that he could serve his father.

At Lubaga Cathedral, the believers were called upon to continue fasting until the last day.

Fr. Francis Xavier Lubega asked the believers to use the holy week to purify themselves. "This being the holy week, you should take this opportunity to purify your souls."
