Asma Gull Hussan — An American muslim on a tour to Ethiopia said that unlike the perception in the other parts of the world, muslims in the United States are not subject to any form of systematic oppression or discrimination.
In a public lecture entitled "Islam in America" held at Awalia School Asma Gull Hassan, a lawyer and editor of the monthly online publication The American Muslim told students and staff that following the September 11, 2001 attacks on New Yourk's Twin Towers, neither the government nor the public at large made Muslims in America targets of attacks except in few and isolated cases.
Asma Hasan pointed out that in the aftermath of 9/11 many non-Muslim Americans offered to stand guard for mosques across America to protect them from possible attacks by misguided individuals.
She also told participants that many of her colleagues and friends called her to tell her that they don't hold grudges against muslims or her in particular and some of them even offered to accompany her wherever she went if she was afraid to go alone.
A daughter of Pakistani immigrants, Asma Hasan grew up in Colorado and graduated from the New York School of Law in May 2001.
She has written two books entitled "Why I am a Muslim" and "American Muslims: The New Generation." She has also been a columnist for the Denver Post and The Pakistani Link newspapers, and a frequent guest on the Fox news channel.
