Kamuli — FIVE people, suspected to have vandalised power cables, were on April 10 arrested during a joint operation by police and Umeme officials.

The CID Officer, Mr Bruhan Mugido, identified the suspects as Mr Alex Kasendhe, Mr Ronald Mudiima, Mr Medi Mugere, Mr David Bandeze and Mr Kasendhe Waiswa.

The suspects are residents of Namukunyu parish.

Mugido said the suspects were arrested at midnight after a tip off and 26 saucepans, metallic basins and an assortment of melted aluminum and 62 kgs of electric wires were recovered.

The District Executive Officer for Umeme, Mr Absolom Nabisiima, said on Tuesday that they conducted a night swoop to recover 12 km of electric wires and 107 poles which have been vandalised since February this year.

Nabisiima said high voltage wires were a prime target, saying it is used in the fabrication of metallic saucepans, kettles and basins.

He urged the residents to cooperate with Umeme and police to curb vandalism which he says is high due to power cuts.

"If any one has information about people who steal wires, please cooperate and inform us and police because it's the (residents) who suffer whenever the wires are stolen," he said.
