Uganda: Karuma, Bujagali Ready in 42 Months

Kampala — BUJAGALI and Karuma dams will be built in 42 months, President Yoweri Museveni has said.

"There is a tight programme to rectify the mistakes caused by the Sixth Parliament and outsiders in the energy sector. We must have two new dams, Bujagali and Karuma, in 42 months. These dams will be built whether we have investors from outside or not.

Therefore, our budgets of the next three financial years should provide for this eventuality," Museveni said.

He was opening an induction retreat for the elected NRM MPs of the Eighth Parliament at Munyonyo on Monday.

Museveni appealed to the Eighth Parliament not to be like the Sixth Parliament, which he said caused the electricity shortage.

"Let us be one Parliament and build these dams," he said.

He said US$100m a year per dam was possible. "We have the money if we agree to prioritise," he said.

He said in the meantime, the Government had worked out short and long term interventions to cope with the energy crisis, including energy saving bulbs, solar energy and micro power projects.
