Kenya: Don't Talk Tough, Build Roads

Nairobi — MOST KENYANS HOPED THAT THE air crash in Marsabit last month that killed 14 government officials and Members of Parliament who were on a peace misson to pacify the warring communities in northern Kenya, was a wake-up call for the government to focus on the deprivation in the north.

One month down the line, the sacrifice seems to have been in vain as the region is no closer to knowing peace than when the leaders stepped onto the ill-fated Air Force plane in Nairobi. For the government to threaten war against the region's communities unless they embrace peace and abandon their historical animosities without addressing the causes of the strife in the first place is completely unacceptable.
