Morocco: Hicham El Guerrouj Retires

The "king of middle distance running" yesterday, in Morocco, confirmed his decision to quit the sport.

Quadruple World 1,500m champion, Hicham El Guerrouj, yesterday confirmed his decision to retire. He made the announcement at a press conference in Casablanca, Morocco. "I am quitting competition. I hope the authorities and Moroccan athletes will continue to work so Moroccan athletics continues to be strong," he said with tears in his eyes. The world record holder said the decision was motivated by personal and family reasons. "I have no willingness or motivation to continue competing. I am quitting racing to spend more time with my family and focus on my business," he said. The athletes thanked all those who contribute to his numerous successes during his sporting life that span across 19 years.
