Uganda: Army Kills 2 in Camp

TWO people were on Friday shot dead by UPDF soldiers at Pabwo parish in Bungatira sub-county Gulu district.

The two, identified as Joel Oryema, 35, and Wilfred Kinyera, 33, were sprayed with over 20 bullets in a hut at around 10pm in the camp. The bodies of the deceased had multiple bullet wounds.

According to residents of the camp who declined to be named for fear of harassment, the two were arrested by UPDF soldiers at 7pm as they were returning to the camp from their garden.

They were later led to an abandoned hut and killed by their captors.

When contacted, the 4th Division Publicist, Lt.Chris Magezi, confirmed the incident, saying that the two were shot after falling into an ambush of soldiers guarding the camp.

Magezi said that the two were thieves who were from stealing chicken.

Gulu police officer in charge of CID, Mr Stephen Akol, who visited the scene, said they were carrying out investigations into the circumstances of the deaths of the civilians.

Meanwhile, residents of Bungatira IDP camp have complained against what they described as misconduct by UPDF soldiers in the area.
