Kigali — "Using ICT is one of the major ways that can lead to improvement of agricultural production mostly in developing countries like Rwanda. That's why the wireless internet connection has been provided to Maraba farmers who are well known for growing good quality coffee, to improve on their production and market," Jean Claude Habimana, the coordinator of R-mail, said.
This was during a function to launch internet connection in the area on June 24.
R-mail is an organisation responsible for spreading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to rural areas.
He added that the programme, which was sponsored by Washington University through United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Terracom, is meant for farmers to carry out research on how they can improve and market their products.
He further said that internet would help coffee farmers to advertise their products through designing websites in order to ease communication with their customers through email and find out how farmers work in other countries. He called upon Maraba farmers to make use of the opportunity.
Juvenal Rurangwa, the president of maraba coffee producers, thanked USAID for their help and added that the internet will facilitate their activities.
"We have been waiting for such opportunities. We have been having problems in accessing the local and international market and communication among our workers has not been easy but with the internet, we hope everything will improve greatly," he said.
