Johannesburg — IN 2002 The Atlantic Monthly, one of America's oldest and most respected literary and political magazines, commissioned a piece on the relationship between the US and Israel from John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt. The two professors delivered on their commission. Alas, The Atlantic Monthly balked at publishing their piece and it did not appear in print until March this year, when it was picked up by the London Review of Books.
The article, published under the title, The Israel Lobby, has acquired a life of its own and, in the process, earned the two authors the wrath of Zionists, on the one hand, and gained them the unsolicited and unwanted endorsement of bigots and anti-Semites.
