Lagos — Second Republic President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has extolled the qualities of Dr Mohamed Buba Marwa, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Welcoming Marwa to his country home in Sokoto, at the weekend, Shagari praised the former Lagos State military governor for his track record in public service and for his excellent performance as governor of Borno and Lagos states.
He advised Marwa who was in Sokoto to welcome Shagari from a medical trip abroad, that in politics, there would be a lot of mudslinging, but that he should remain steadfast and undaunted in the race towards 2007.
Shagari said although he had retired from active politics, he remained interested in happenings around him, and would offer advice whenever consulted.
He said he watched the flag-off of Marwa's presidential campaign, which took place at the Eagle Square, Abuja on Saturday, June 24, and described it as well conducted. Earlier, Marwa said the visit was a courtesy call, occasioned by the desire to rejoice with Shagari on his successful medical trip abroad. He sought Shagari's advice and prayers, pledging to work creditably if given the opportunity to lead the country.
Marwa also paid a courtesy call on the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Maccido.
The Sultan spoke glowingly of him and told Marwa to feel comfortable in Sokoto. "Consider Sokoto as home," the Sultan said, and prayed for him and his entourage. Marwa's train thereafter moved to the Government House, Sokoto, on a courtesy call on the state Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa.
Marwa praised the governor for his achievements, and also for floating a new party, the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP). He thanked the governor for warmly receiving him and members of his entourage, and prayed for God's continued blessings.
Bafarawa commended Marwa, saying he watched the flag-off of his presidential campaign on the television.
