Liberia: UL Establishes Kofi Annan Institute of Peace

4 July 2006

As a mark of honor for his track record in peace building, the University of Liberia Faculty Senate has established the "Kofi A. Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation" at the University of Liberia.

In a resolution adopted on July 1, 2006, the ULFS stated that the center will provide the space for civil society, actors of the Liberian peace process, government officials, legislators, and other stakeholders to dialogue and draw lessons from the theory of transformation.

The center, according to the resolution, aims at creating a sound knowledge base for peace and human security issues as they relate to sustainable national development. The center will also create a cadre of scholars and analysts with research and analytical skills on conflict resolution, peace maintenance, and security enhancement toward national development.

The UL Board of Trustees concluded this resolution with the endorsement of the Senate's Research and Development Bureau's Chief, B. McCarthy Weh II and the recommendation of the visitor of the UL, President Sirleaf.

The UL Faculty Senate indicated that with the existence of a Center for Conflict Transformation, the UL curriculum now substantively covers peace studies and sustainable development issues.

The resolution further noted that "in this context and as a mark of respect for this shimmering and exemplary son of Africa, the existing Center for Conflict Transformation (CCT) at the University of Liberia be named in honor of His Excellency Kofi A.

Annan, to be known and styled The Kofi A. Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation, (KAICT) at the University of Liberia." It can be recalled that prior to the arrival of the UN Secretary-General in Liberia, the head of the Senate Research and Development Bureau, Mr. McCarthy Weh II, had recommended the establishment of a school of peace in the Secretary-General's honor.
