Amodu Shuabu is on the way to a position many say is now the right place for him in Nigerian football.
The former Super Eagles coach was in Abuja to observe the congress that dissolved the Galadima board and his presence possibly reminded some highly placed actors in Nigerian football that the man could still be of great use to Nigerian football. And the position that readily came to mind was that of Technical Director in the Nigeria Football Association.
NFA has always lacked a competent hand for that position, making the technical department none existent. The none existence of the technical department was one of the problems a World Cup Qualification Rescue Committee maintained partly contributed to Nigeria's failure to qualify for the last World Cup. It was noted that if NFA had a sound technical department, the body would have advised properly over some technical problems that arose at the time.
Now, Amodu was on the lips of some who are influential enough to place him on the job he also merits.
And another issue that came up was the management of Super Eagles and it was readily agreed that a foreign coach of high repute would be engaged to lead Nigeria to 2010 World Cup qualifying series and tournament proper. Interestingly, the Galadima board also decided on this but were yet to announce it because of the long crisis that estranged them from the sports ministry.
The new board that would be elected on August 29 would be made to appreciate the importance of employing a foreign coach if members do not reason along the same line.
"What do you think of Amodu Shuabu as the next technical director," one of the authorities asked this reporter whose response was positive on the former BCC coach.
"That's good to hear from you and he deserves it. We will push for it for the interest of Nigerian football," he said.
He also confirmed the need and proposed move for foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
The authority we quoted had variously been involved in engaging coaches for the Super Eagles and funding of the FA and football in general.
