Sierra Leone: Bombali District Increases Local Tax

Abu S. Tarawali

24 July 2006

The recent increase in the rate for local tax in the Bombali District, Northern region of Sierra Leone by the district council has raised concerns about the people's cooperation.

The chiefdom authorities in the district has unanimously increased the rate from Le 2,000 (two thousand leones) to Le5,000 (five thousand leones) this year without proper consultation with the communities affected.

The central chiefdom finance clerk (CCFC) in the Bombali district, Mr. Samuel Turay, speaking in an interview with this press in Freetown raised concern that the payment of local tax is the major problem the central chiefdom is facing, noting that the chiefdom people should cooperate because development could only come in the entire chiefdom if the community is prepared to pay their local tax.

He appealed to the community to pay the local tax of Le 5,000 per head to enhance development in their respective communities, and disclosed that the increase in the local tax is a decision taken by the Bombali district and that 40% of the total local tax goes to the district council for development.
