Kigali — Residents in Simbi sector have been called upon to join hands in forming co-operative unions to fight against poverty.
Andrew Ndeze, Huye district co-ordinator to PREPAF, made the request on Wednesday, July 26 during a function aimed at examining how the funded unions were utilising loans. PREPAF provides loans to low-income co-operative unions with an objective of elevating rural and women's development.
He added that PREPAF prefers to give loans to those who come together with a project to help them escape poverty.
"Our loans are always aimed at rural development; that's why we do not ask for interest like banks explained Ndeze. "We prefer giving them to co-operative unions rather than individuals because when people come together they pool ideas and come up with a good project."
He said Simbi sector had used its loans impressively and appropriately to help alleviate poverty in the district.
Anastase Mukaruranga, president of Dufatanye -- one of the co-operative unions that were funded by PREPAF -- thanked the organization for its support in the fight against poverty.
Dufatanye, which operates in Simbi sector, was formed in 2003 and currently has 16 permanent members.
With the loans, they have constructed a well and bought fertilizers and even livestock.
