Nigeria: Katsina ANPP Expels Buhari

Katsina — FORMER Head of State and the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) presidential candidate in the 2003 election, General Muhammadu Buhari has been expelled from the party in his home state of Katsina.

Buhari who was expelled by ANPP in Katsina State alongside Senator Abu Ibrahim, Katsina South senatorial zone, was accused of anti-party activities and total disregard for the party constitution, among other allegations.

Briefing newsmen on Thursday in Katsina, the assistant secretary of the party in the state, Alhaji Sani Bature disclosed that the conduct of Buhari and Senator Abu was nothing other than flagrant disobedience and absolute negligence towards lawful directive of the party.

Bature said contrary to the provision of article 25 of the party constitution, General Buhari and his cohorts assumed the position of the executive of the party and constituted an illegal caretaker committee to work against the duly constituted caretaker committee set up by the out-going executive and stakeholders of the party in the state.

He stressed that Buhari's inauguration of his personal illegal caretaker committee against the constitution of the party did not only cause embarrassment to ANPP but also brought it to hatred, contempt, ridicule and disrepute.

The unlawful behaviour of the two, he further disclosed, has led to factionalisation with parallel party organs being created at all levels in the state and this has necessitated their expulsion by the caretaker committee based on the power conferred on it by the article 25 (vii), (b), (1), of the party constitution.

He said the party in the state has exhausted all possible avenues and was left with no other choice than to expel the duo in the interest of the party and its teeming supporters in the state in particular and the nation in general.

Bature noted that ANPP can no longer condone Senator Abu Ibrahim's deceit, lies, decadence, dishonesty, breach of trust and sycophancy which characterized his activities in the PDP leading to his expulsion from the party.

He submitted that the purported expulsion of Senator Kanti Bello, Katsina North senatorial zone, was not only illegal but an act capable of having adverse effect on the ANPP as a party known for justice.

On the position of the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, the outgoing chairman of the party in the State Alh. Nafi'u Dandagoro revealed that the Buhari caretaker committee was illegal and hence, was only recognised by the headquarters.

State executive members, most local government chairmen of the party and party elders were present at the briefing held at Zambrush Suite Hotel rather than the party secretariat.

Reacting to the expulsion, ANPP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Nyia Asuquo said it was unconstitutional as the state chapter lacked such powers.

He however, told Daily Champion on telephone that he has not been briefed on the issue.
