Tanzania: Officer Lashes Out At Local NGOs Dependence On Donors

Arusha — Many local Non Governmental Organizations (NGO's) depend on international donors thus making most of them fail in their mission.

This was said by The Arusha Non Governmental Organizations Network (ANGONET) secretary Mr. Peter Bayo during a workshop held at the Golden Rose Hotel in the municipality on July 26, this year.

The workshop was held for the Arusha and Arumeru District NGO's on Local Resource Mobilization (LRM). Over 28 NGO's participated from both Districts.

Mr. Bayo said most NGO's rely on local and international donors so there is need for them to realize that they can also do without the donors by getting the resources that are needed to be able to do the work they have outlined.

Mr. Bayo said resources mobilization is more than just fund-raising, it is about getting a range of resources, from a wide range of resources providers through a number of mechanisms.

The biggest challenge facing NGO's in Eastern and Southern Africa, and else where in sub-Saharan Africa, is obtaining resources.

He urged the local NGO's to create resources whereby they would be able to succeed in financial sustainability, lending itself to greater organizational independence and most importantly local citizen support.
